Anyone who’s been around the skincare field probably has heard the word “peptide.” It’s often thrown around as a beneficial ingredient for anti-aging, but what exactly is it? Let’s look at a brief review of what peptides are and if they can help us!

Put simply, Peptides are chains of amino acids. You can think of them as fragments of protein, and as we all know, proteins are the building blocks of the skin. Without protein we may suffer from loss of firmness, elasticity, and collagen in our skin. Peptides help to repair this damage. They serve a role in repairing tissue and forming the texture of our skin. They also have been found to enhance immune response and boost oxygen uptake in our cells. Oxygen in our cells means a brighter, glowing complexion. It also means a stronger internal protection in our skin to fight damaging environmental influences. So clearly these little guys are important!

Where can you find peptides? You will often find these listed in anti-aging products. Moisturizers, creams, and serums are a great way to get some peptide action in our skin. So check your ingredient labels and be on the lookout for these guys. You may see them listed in a slightly different forms. In natural products they may be listed simply as proteins. In more mainstream cosmetics, one of the most common you will come across is Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3. But you may also see them listed as Acetyl Hexapeptide-3 (focused on firming the skin), Palmitoyl Oligopeptide (stimulates fibroblasts to product more collagen) or Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 (focuses on reducing inflammation). Ingredient lists can get lengthy and confusing but if you keep an eye out for that “peptide” in the middle of the word you should be good!
