Your skin is a wonderful machine. It protects you, helps you absorb valuable nutrients, and removes harmful toxins from your body. Your skin has a full time job taking care of you,and so it's no wonder sometimes things start to pile up, literally! As we age, our skin has a harder time regenerating, or shedding that top layer of the stratum corneum off the epidermis. With a buildup of excess dead skin comes all sorts of problems such as: dull and lifeless complexion, dry and uneven skin and excess oil clogged pores leading to acne. Don't be afraid! You can fix your dull skin blues with a little exfoliation! But the question remains, what type of exfoliation is right for you? And how often should you exfoliate? Read on and find out!

With choices for exfoliants ranging from mechanical, chemical, and enzymatic, how do you know which is right for you? Why not try out all three! Mechanical exfoliation can be as simple as a "do it yourself" sugar scrub and as involved as a microdermabrasion treatment (to learn more about Micro, see my previous blog all about it.) These methods can be effective but can inflame the skin if done incorrectly or too frequently.

A chemical exfoliant, such as an AHA or BHA peel, is a great way to feel instantly fresh. Pro TIp: If you have oily skin, stick to a beta-hydroxy acid peel. BHA's love oil and will clear it up in no time. For dryer complexions, AHA's are the perfect solution for a fresher face.

Finally, for a day to day clean, try an enzymatic exfoliant. Enzymes attack only the dead skin on your face, leaving you feeling brightened but not irritated. Dermalogica's Daily Microfoliant is an excellent enzymatic option.

How often should you exfoliate? That depends on the type of exfoliation. Mechanical scrubs can be used one to two times a week depending on your skin type. Chemical exfoliants should be spaced out a little further to give your skin time to recover. Enzymatic exfoliants can be used more frequently since they only eat away the dead cells.

A special thanks to our handsome model for showing us real men take care of their skin with this coffee exfoliant.
