As is usually the case, we find Korea ahead of the game on all things skincare. This latest trend is no different: Tree Sap.

Tree Sap might be the last thing we would think of adding into our skincare routine, but unsurprisingly Asia has been using this potent ingredient in their skincare for centuries. Sap is the lifeblood of the tree. It boasts high levels of antioxidants and is rich in amino acids and minerals. It hasn’t been oft used in the past because of the difficulty in stabilizing it in skincare solutions. However, advancements in the industry have made this ingredient easier to include and do to its molecular size, it’s easily absorbed into the skin, making it the perfect addition to your regimen.

There are several types of sap seeping its way into the industry. Birch sap is know for it’s healing properties, Dragon Tree Sap is firming, Ginseng is strengthening and Maple sap with its small molecular size is deep penetrating and quick acting.

One sap making more waves than most is Bamboo. To understand why Bamboo is a skin all-star, let’s take a quick detour to talk about Silica. Silica is a mineral found in the earth. It is also naturally present in the body but decreases as we age. It can bind over 300 times its weight in water and can help boost collagen production, making it an effective ingredient in anti-aging. Ok now that we understand the important of Silica lets get back to Bamboo! Bamboo is one of the richest source of silica available to us making it a super ingredient in the fight against aging. It has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties meaning its beneficial for aging, acne, and sensitive skin.

Now that you know Bamboo, is worth your time, how do you use it? Eminence Skin care has a great line of bamboo featured products. Try out their Guava & Bamboo Age-Defying Moisturizer for firming and moisturizing properties. (Note: I don’t recommend this product for oily skin. It contains Shea Butter which is highly moisturizing but can be clogging if you have larger pores.) Use their Bamboo Age Correcting Masque to promote elasticity and use their Bamboo Firming Fluid to firm but also naturally hydrate.
